IKEA Portland Awards Morrison $3625
IKEA PORTLAND awards $3,625 to support foster families and children

September 7, 2011 – IKEA Portland awarded Morrison Child and Family Services $3,625 in goods and cash to support foster families and children.

IKEA Portland provided supplies for 70 “Kits for Kids.” The kits include a shoulder bag, twin-sized sheets and pillowcases, a towel, a washcloth and a travel alarm clock. In addition to the donated goods IKEA provided Morrison with a check in the amount of $750 for the purchase of personal-care items.

Morrison treatment programs employ foster care to provide temporary and transitional therapeutic homes to Morrison clients referred for treatment. Children and youth that are placed in Foster/Proctor Care homes are often traumatized, having experienced severe neglect, domestic violence, and/or sexual abuse. Sometimes they have been “bounced” from several different living situations before landing at Morrison, and it is vitally important that these children feel safe and nurtured in their new environment. These therapeutic homes are staffed by carefully screened and recruited parents who are able to provide the safety, comfort and stimulation these children and youth require. Foster parents provide healthy models for parenting which enable many children and youth to have a corrective, re-parenting experience.

The IKEA vision is “to create a better everyday life for the many people.” IKEA Portland began its Community Support Program before the store opened in 2007 to help local organizations and nonprofits that benefit children, the environment or both through generous grants and in-kind donations.

Morrison Child and Family Services is the leading provider of children’s mental health services in Multnomah County. A private, non-profit organization headquartered in Portland since 1947, Morrison partners with families and communities to provide effective and responsive services for children and youth coping with the mental and emotional issues that result from trauma.
